A longtime employee of both Danbury and New Fairfield took in more than $370,000 in taxpayer dollars in 2019 through his jobs in both communities.
Antonio Iadarola is Danbury’s full-time public works director and acting city engineer and New Fairfield’s part-time engineer.
He earned nearly $210,000 from Danbury and about $160,000 from New Fairfield, according to data from the municipalities. He was the highest-paid employee in city and town government in both communities.
Iadarola said he balances both jobs by working holidays and weekends.
“My priority has always been my full-time job and (New Fairfield) has never imposed on that commitment,” said Iadarola, who has a professional engineer’s license.
It is unclear how common it is for municipal employees in the state to work for multiple communities. The Connecticut Conference of Municipalities was unable to provide this information by Thursday.
But Betsy Gara, executive director of the Connecticut Council of Small Towns, said it is often hard for municipalities to find qualified candidates for niche positions, such as engineers or utility employees.
“We see towns sharing employees, regionalizing certain functions, such as town planning, relying on people that can fill part-time positions (or) fill those positions on a part-time basis,” she said.
Iadarola has worked for New Fairfield for more than 22 years and for Danbury for 14 years, Iadarola said. Before Danbury, he worked for Stamford.
“Prior to being hired in Danbury, I fully disclosed the fact that I did part-time work for (New Fairfield) and it’s pretty well known,” Iadarola said. “In all these years, it was never a problem in Stamford and it’s never been a problem here in Danbury for now 14 years.”
Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton agreed Iadarola’s New Fairfield job has not affected his work in Danbury.
“He’s done a phenomenal job for our city,” Boughton said. “He’s available night and day, weekends.”
The arrangement works for New Fairfield, too, First Selectwoman Pat Del Monaco said.

“It works very well for us,” she said. “We rely on his expertise and history with the town quite a bit. It’s a good working relationships for us.”
New Fairfield does not have enough engineering work to require a full-time engineer, she said.
Iadarola mainly reviews drawings and site plans and helps with the permitting process, including conducting inspections, Del Monaco said.
Recently, he has been involved in bridge projects and reviewing plans for a new commercial building, she said.
Data from New Fairfield’s finance department states Iadarola works 29 hours per week in 2020 at $87.47 an hour. At that rate, he would earn almost $132,000 by the end of the year.
Iadarola said his hours in New Fairfield vary depending on workload, while he is scheduled to work 35 hours for Danbury. City Hall is closed on Fridays, so Iadarola often completes New Fairfield tasks those days, in addition to holidays and weekends, he said.
Iadarola said he covers and manages all emergencies related to his department in Danbury.
“Some years, I never get any rest and I work crazy hours covering emergencies,” he said. “This year, so far, has been great with storms and emergencies. Other than a few water main breaks, it has been the best year ever since I started in Danbury.”
Boughton said he and Iadarola often talk or text on the phone beginning at 5:30 a.m. Iadarola always answers Boughton’s phone calls, no matter the time, the mayor said.
“We really get our money’s worth with Antonio,” Boughton said. “I’ve worked with a lot of people in this business and he’s one of the smartest.”

Iadarola said he is an Italian immigrant who “came to the United States with nothing but the clothes on my back.”

He grew up watching his family members work multiple jobs in factories.
“The difference is that my parents were out of the house working two or more jobs, where I am at the kitchen table, working on a computer, trying to get my own kids off of their electronics and to do their homework,” Iadarola said.
He volunteers to sit on interview panels in other communities and sits on the state’s School Building Projects Advisory Council.
Iadarola said he is the kind of person who always wants to work.
“I am a complete Type A personality who usually goes 100 mph at all times and can't stay idle at all,” he said.
